PSA: Do NOT install VirtualBox 4.2.4 on Win8Prox64

By | November 6, 2012

Just did this, install went fine. Afterward, network was dead. That’s kinda expected given what VirtualBox does w/ your network drivers.

No matter what I did, enable/disable adapter, run troubleshooter, etc I couldn’t get it back. So I rebooted. It hung on the Windows logo and never got in to the system. Ended up getting VERY lucky by having a 3hr old system restore image that I had to use. It was the only way things booted up again for me.

You’ve been warned.

4.1 works fine (with BOTH Microsofts’s Hyper-V and vmware’s services disabled).
Have you tried 4.2 after disabling Microsoft’s HYPER-V?

I haven’t tried that as having hyper-v on is a req for windows phone 8 development (using emulator) and I don’t want to have to be shutting that on and off… Have u heard that perhaps that’s the culprit here?

yes, I have read about conflicts between those two…

I have no lust to test/try it out now, since I got vmware workstation 9.0.1 trial and that is sooo much better virtualisation solution than VirtualBox (I run Linux guests in my Win 8 Pro host laptop, nice @ full screen res.).
Anyway, theres no big difference from VBox 4.1 to 4.2, as far as I can remember and I missed the full resolution so badly in both (small screen estate in laptop)
